Yves Saint Laurent's death

Yves Saint Laurent, was one of the most influential and enduring designers of the 20th century, he empowered women through his fashion. Saint Laurent died yesterday at his Paris home. He was 71. There is a famous saying in the fashion industry that goes like this: "Chanel gave women freedom" and Saint Laurent "gave them power." He was a libertarian, an anarchist and he transformed women and the way society views women. He was considered the last of a generation among Christian Dior and Coco Chanel from the set who have their never ending influence not only on fashion industry but on everyone's day to day life. He created instant classics that remain stylish decades later.

His most famous contributions are: The famous YSL tuxedo, the trim pantsuits, the see-through blouses, the safari jackets and glamorous gowns.

Saint Laurent was born Aug. 1, 1936, in Oran, Algeria, his father was a shipping executive. At the age of 17, he won first prize in a contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat for a cocktail dress design. A year later in 1954, he enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale school of haute couture, but it lasted only three months. He was introduced to Christian Dior and Dior was so impressed with Saint Laurent's talent that he hired him on the spot. When Dior died suddenly in 1957, Saint Laurent was named head of the House of Dior at the age of 21. He opened his own haute couture fashion house with Berge in 1962. The pair later started a chain of Rive Gauche ready-to-wear boutiques. Saint Laurent's simple navy blue pea coat over white pants, which the designer first showed in 1962, was one of his hallmarks. His "smoking," or tuxedo jacket, of 1966 remade the tux as a high fashion statement for both sexes. It remained the designer's trademark item and was updated yearly until he retired.

Saint Laurent's rising star was eternalized in 1983, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted a show to his work, the first ever to a living designer. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1985.

"I've known fear and terrible solitude," he said. "Tranquilizers and drugs, those phony friends. The prison of depression and hospitals. I've emerged from all this, dazzled but sober."

LÓNG THE AUTHENTIC PERSIAN SCARF

History of "Long"!

The "Long" is a rectangular fabric made of cotton and hemp, with a black hue on a red background.

Beginning from 2000 years ago, Iranians wore two kinds of aprons: one made of leather used specifically by laborers and soldiers, and the other made of fabric (mostly hemp, though occasionally from soft wool) for officials and laymen. Throughout the ages, the hemp apron evolved into a square pattern that served to distinguish Iranians from the others. Over the course of history, Iranian settlements in the fertile regions of Qazvin succeeded in discovering the secret to dying these fabrics. From then on, Iranian loincloths, much like their traditional carpets, took on a special red hue that is permanent in nature.

The red-colored hues of Iranian "Longs" are derived from a wild flower that is found in the central and southern regions of the country. In the spring, young ladies would collect these flowers and boil them in large cauldrons. The red hue that would emerge was a fiery one that remains permanently if washed in special spring waters. From the 19th century onward, red-colored Longs that distinguished Persians from other Muslims were used exclusively in baths located in gymnasiums (zoor-khaneh) dedicated to traditional Iranian martial arts.

During traditional wrestling matches between two mighty opponents, the referee would stop the match by throwing a long in the middle of the arena before separating the opponents and declaring the winner.

BlackList's frontman Josh Strawn wears NIMANY on the stage!
One of Nima's favorite NYC bands and inspired by groups such as The Comsat Angels, The Manic Street Preachers, Suede, The Sound, and For Against, Blacklist is simultaneously celebratory and melancholy, replacing the hysterical protest song of the 20th century with anthems for a new generation weaned on amusement and starved for confrontation.

"I came across NIMANY designs (if I remember correctly) because I keep up as best I can with the underground rock scene in Iran. The only way to do this is via the Internet, and it just happened that one day I came across a site with photos of his work. Persian calligraphy is gorgeous and NIMANY's stylistic interpretations of it are very cool, so of course I was very taken with his work. It goes without saying that oftentimes the fashion world is little more than superficial, overpriced absurdity, but I think this lable is visually attractive and positions fashion in a place where it has the power to be political without sacrificing depth or aesthetics. Generally when people in fashion try to get political, they're just branding self-righteousness. NIMANY, on the other hand is trafficking in symbols and emblems that subversively expose the sophistication and modernity of a culture and language that's by and large misrepresented in the West. So instead of being a politics of consumerist self-satisfaction, I see what they're doing as an excellent strike back to our media and popular culture's lack of understanding and appreciation for Iran's art and history.

And the best part about it is that it works rather effortlessly at this and doesn't beat you over the head. But in the end, I dig their designs because I think they're really fantastic looking. Sort of like Blacklist tunes--if you want to read my lyrics for the subtexts and hear us as a political band, you can certainly do that and you can practically get a reading list from our songs (Ibn Rushd, Omar Khayyam, George Orwell, Victor Serge, Arjun Appadurai, Ramin Jahanbegloo, Salman Rushdie, Slavoj Zizek, just to give you the short list). But if you just like the music, that works too. You don't have to know who Akbar Ganji and Zakia Zaki are to appreciate 'When Worlds Collide' by us. Same with NIMANY, you don't even have to know it's Persian to know that you love the way it looks. In other words, it is form or melody that succeeds first--if the more thought out ideas and agendas work too, they are only able to do so because the rest is already in place and one's appreciation of one shouldn't condition too much your ability to appreciate the other. That's what I try to do with our music and it's how I feel about NIMANY's project." says Josh Strawn of Blacklist.

This past Monday NIMANY rolled out the red carpet and hosted the hottest party in town at New York hotspot RUNWAY. It was a night full of beautiful people, fabulous times, and, of course, great fashion. The occasion was NIMANY creator, Nima Behnoud's Birthday – and what better gift can you get as a designer than to see 12 models showing off your designs on the catwalk? Indeed, in anticipation of Fashion Week, the highlight of the night was a full-out fashion show with leggy models strutting their stuff in the newest NIMANY designs. The evening was a complete success, and no doubt, by the end of the night every partygoer was very aware that T-shirts isn't all NIMANY can do – they throw one hell of a party too.
